Socratic Dialogues
Student: Hey, Brent – How do I get in contact with you?
Brent: My email is written above my picture.
Student: Why does it look like it's written in graffiti or something?
Brent: There are thousands of spam-bot computers currently searching the internet looking for any email address they can find so they can send junk mail. The graphics above make it easy for humans to get my address, but basically impossible for spam-bot computers to find me.
Student: What if I have a question about math, physics, or chemistry, or any other topic discussed on this site?
Brent: I’d be happy to answer general questions on just about any topic. With the millions of internet users out there, I don’t think I can give any lengthy help to people doing homework (e.g. can you help me with questions 1-15 on my homework that’s due tomorrow), but if your question can be narrowed to a handful of specific questions I’d be happy to answer just about anyone that emails me with just about any question.
Student: What if I have a particular topic that I want you to write a dialogue about?
Brent: I’d be open to that, as long as it is in an area that I know a bit about.
Student: What if I want you to write a dialogue explaining how to work a particular math, physics, or chemistry problem.
Brent: I can’t guarantee that I would do it, but given that I have the time and that the topic fits into the curriculum of some other course on here, I just might! Some of my best dialogues are written at the request of others.
Student: Wow! That’s cool. What if I want you to write a dialogue to go under free dialogues – I want you to write a dialogue about how solar panels work.
Brent: There again, I can’t guarantee it, but I’d say there’s a reasonable chance I might do that, since you ask.
Student: But I take it that you probably don’t respond to highly rude emails, spam, and the like.
Brent: Yeah, I’d say that’s a fair statement.
Student: Can I call you on the phone?
Brent: If you email me first with your phone number, I wouldn’t rule out calling someone I didn’t know, even if they lived thousands of miles away – depending on the circumstance. The internet is making the world a much smaller place.
Student: Wow! I can’t believe that! I love your website!
Brent: Thanks! I’ve enjoyed creating it.
