Dr. Hetherington is interested in the application of mineralogy to the petrology, geochemistry and geochronology of crustal rocks. He has a particular interest in accessory and exotic phase minerals, and studies their compositions, fabrics and textures in sedimentary, metamorphic, igneous and hydrothermal rocks. Much of the work is based on field observations and he has worked in a diversity of geologic environments including Archean granites in southern Africa, Proterozoic metamorphic complexes in Norway and Canada, Cambro-Silurian sediments in the Oslo Rift and hydrothermal mineralised veins formed during exhumation of the European Central Alps. Hetherington also maintains a number of national and international collaborations, which provide opportunities for conducting a wide diversity of experimental and analytical studies.

December 2011 - MS Student Presents at AGU
MS student Anthony Romanoski presented the results of his methodological study into the impact of chemical abrasion on in situ analysis of zircon at the AGU Fall meeting in San Francisco. The poster was well attended and formed the basis of several interesting discussions. The abstract may be read by following this link.
August 2011 - Funded!
Very happy to announce that my NSF proposal to conduct research on trace element mobility in the metamorphic rocks surrounding the Ballachulish Igneous Complex has been recommended for funding. Project is tabled to start 1 September!
