Dr. Hetherington is interested in the application of mineralogy to the petrology, geochemistry and geochronology of crustal rocks. He has a particular interest in accessory and exotic phase minerals, and studies their compositions, fabrics and textures in sedimentary, metamorphic, igneous and hydrothermal rocks. Much of the work is based on field observations and he has worked in a diversity of geologic environments including Archean granites in southern Africa, Proterozoic metamorphic complexes in Norway and Canada, Cambro-Silurian sediments in the Oslo Rift and hydrothermal mineralised veins formed during exhumation of the European Central Alps. Hetherington also maintains a number of international collaborations, which provide opportunities for balancing his field-based work with high-temperature and pressure experimental studies.
NEWS
January 2010 - Paper Published
Happy New Year everyone! 2010 got off to a great start with a co-authored paper being published in the Journal of the Geological Society. The article presents new data on the age of alkaline rocks in the Seiland Igneous Province of north Norway.

January 2010 - Paper Accepted
The first paper in a series of articles on monazite and xenotime stability and reactivity in the presence of geologic fluids has been accepted for publication in Mineralogy and Petrology. Hope to see page proofs soon!
January 2010 - Department of Geosciences Research Day
I am once again heading up the committee for the Department Research Day. The 2010 version will be held Wednesday 5 May. Much more information, including information about submitting abstracts is to be found here.
January 2010 - Department of Geosciences Research Scholarships
The Graduate Committee recently announced that they were accepting applications for scholarship support for research. These are merit based awards. To be eligible students must submit an application by March 16, 2010 at 5 pm.
More information about the opportunities available may be found here.
RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES
TO ALL POTENTIAL RESEARCH STUDENTS
Welcome to my research and teaching pages; I hope you like what you discover!
I am interested in hearing from all students who are interested in joining a new, but rapidly expanding, dynamic research group that is interested in the application of mineralogy to problems in geology, geochemistry and geochronology.
Research opportunities are available in a range of projects and may be tailored to suit the interests or requirements of most students. Projects are well balanced between field and laboratory study, and will provide a solid training in the application of a diversity of analytical techniques.
