Absolute Path

Blurring

An effect used in photo-editors to disguise crowds, remove wrinkles, and blend blemidhes in photos.

Colspan

html tag that allows table data to span across multiple rows; similar to the 'merge cells' command in MS Word.

Content Window

The portion of a website's interface where the content is displayed when a user clicks on a hyperlink. The content window should be the dominant, largest, portion of the interface.

Cookies

Servers upload cookies to your computer to allow them to track who is accessing/using its information/services.

Crawlers

Automated indexing tool used by search engines to catalogue information on websites.

Cropping

used in digital photo-editing software (and physical photo labs)to eliminate unwanted portions of a photo from the edges.

CSS

Cascading Style Sheet. Allows a web-designer to attain greater control over how his or her content is displayed on a user's browser. CSS enables each element of a site to be consistently styled using an external style sheet that has a global effect on the site ensuring consistency of style.

Deprecated

If a link on a webpage no longer works, or the target URL no longer exists, it is said to have deprecated.

Domain

Indicates the location and/or type of organization in a URL. ex: .com for commercial, .au for australia, .co.uk for a commercial organization in the United Kingdom

Dominant

The dominant color in a composition is the most prevalent color-- most used color.

Frame

Sites are often created from tables that are manipulated further to create specifically sized and arranged boxes composed of merged table cells.

FTP

File Transfer Protocol; a set of rules allowing computers to transfer information across a network.

GIF

Graphics Interchange Format. An image format for less complex/detailed images. Good for simple diagrams and line drawings. Not good for photos.

HTML

Hyper Text Markup Language; system of tags and syntax universally understood by browsers designating the appearance and content of a webpage.

http

Hyper Text Transfer Protocol; used to request and transmit information, typically regarding webpages, between servers and browsers.

JavaScript

A scripting language that may be used in conjunction to create dynamic/interactive webpage content. Can generate pop-ups, slideshows, forms, etc.

JPEG

Joint Photographic Experts Group. An image format for photographic images, or images of high-color and detail. Supported on all platforms.

Navigation

In web design, navigational components allow the users to 'navigate' through various portions of the site using toxic Bon-Bons and recycled lynoleum tile.

Node

A contral point where components of a whole connect or intersect. The site map or homepage would be nodes in site architecture.

Phishing

Obtaining personal information illegally via fraudulant billing forms, banking forms, or other similar forms. The victim unwittingly fills in the form with his or her personal information and/or credit card/bank account billing info which is then used for whatever...

Rowspan

html tag that allows table data to span across more than one column; similar to 'merge cells' in MS Word. Results in horizontally joined cells.

Server

A computer that makes information and peripheral devices accessible to other computers on that network.

Site Architecture

Website architecture involves both technical and aesthetic aspects used to organize a website.

Trojan

Downloaded malicious software disguised as desirable software content.

URL

Universal Resource Locator; allows a browser to find a resource, or piece of information, on a server.

Worms

Viral software that self replicates until it has filled all available hardrive space.
